There is a crack, a crack in everything.

That’s how the light gets in.6

LEONARD COHEN

But chemistry is not all we are. For the great majority of us, restlessness, a sense of lack and separation, is intrinsic to being human. When I am in New York, I wonder about Paris. When I am in Paris, I think of London. In London I think of my friends in New York. I shall probably always hear whispers leading me to suspect there might be something greener elsewhere. Show me a map of the Mediterranean, and all my longings flutter up like sand swallows.

But it has gradually dawned on me that my dreaming is an intrinsic part of who I am; it has caused me as much joy as it has trouble, so why would I want to change it, much less get rid of it, any more than I would the nose on my face? Why would I deprive myself of the poignant pleasure of nostalgia? Trouble comes, not when the itch starts to itch, but when I persist in trying to scratch it away; in trying to do something to fix it.
